Softball Walks Off Twice in Conference Opener

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern won its first two Sun Conference games of the year in its last at bat of each game.

An RBI double by Erica Stahl gave the Fire a 2-1 win over Webber International in the first game, and an RBI single by Britt Robinson won Game 2, 8-7 in eight innings.

The Fire have now won seven-straight one-run games.

"They believe it right now," said coach Kayla Watkins of the comeback efforts. "The girls know they've done it a couple of times and in their gut, they know they can fight back."

Southeastern took the lead in the first game with a bases-loaded walk to Haleigh Harrell in the second inning and freshman pitcher Autumn Hunter made the lone run be enough to sustain the lead all the way to the seventh inning.

Hunter kept the Warriors off balance working both sides of the plate and allowed just one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks to earn her eighth win of the year.

In the seventh, the Warriors got an RBI single to right to tie the game and force the Fire to hit in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs and runners at first and third, Stahl ripped a pitch to the gap in left field to score Sam Holcomb and give the Fire the win.

Southeastern took an early 2-0 lead in their first at bat of the second game with Kaley Sarasty hitting an RBI single to center field and a second run scoring on an error. However, the Warriors responded with four in the top of the second with three of the runs unearned due to two SEU errors.

An RBI single by Hannah Bonner in the third made it a one-run game, and in the sixth, Madison Williams scored Ramsey Sullivan on a bunt single to tie the game and eventually force extra innings.

The Warriors plated three in the top of the eighth to take a 7-4 lead.

"I told them you are supposed to score runs in extras with the runner starting on second and we could absolutely put three up," said Watkins.

Watkins was right.

The Fire came up with four runs with Williams again bringing home Sullivan, who started the inning on second base, then Harrell scored on a close play at the plate on a ground ball to third by Katie Atkins to bring them within a run. Stahl brought in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to set the stage for Robinson's game ending single to left field to bring in Williams.

"There are times where maybe they doubt it, but we remind them or they remind each other, but they're playing with a lot of confidence right now," said Watkins.

Williams was 3-for-5 in the second game with two runs scored and two driven in. Sarasty added two hits.

Hunter earned the win, throwing two-thirds of an inning in relief of Payton Thomas, who allowed just two earned on seven hits over 7.1 innings with four strikeouts and five walks.
