LAKELAND, Fla. - The Fire women's basketball team had a substantial win over the Coastal Georgia Mariners to win their unprecedented sixth-straight Sun Conference regular season title, defeating them 101-41.
Straight from the tip-off,
Madi Hecox and
Haley Howarth knocked down back to back three-pointers, forcing Coastal into a timeout only 56 seconds into the game.
SEU forced 28 turnovers against the Mariners, giving the Fire 39 points from these possessions. They also grabbed 21 steals.
Shooting was on tonight for the Fire, they shot 53% from the field and 55% from the three-point line, putting in 11 of their 20 three-point attempts.
Howarth was the leading scorer for the game with 29 points, hitting six of her nine three-point shots.
Gabrielle Ozoude recorded another double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Hecox finished 100% from the floor, making all field goals, three-point attempts and free throws. She had 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Tonight's win locked down The Sun Conference regular season title for the Fire, breaking a conference record with six straight regular season titles. The previous record was set last year by SEU with five straight titles.
The Fire will face Webber next Thursday on the road at 5:30 p.m.
