LAKELAND, Fla.—After splitting a doubleheader yesterday with No. 12 William Carey, the Southeastern University softball team split another doubleheader today against Freed-Hardeman.
The Fire won the first game 9-0 in six innings thanks to
Autumn Hunter tossing a dominant performance from the circle and consistent hitting from the bats throughout the contest. SEU dropped game 4-0 as they struggled to get into a rhythm at the plate.
GAME ONE:
Hunter and the Fire were able to play with a lead after just one inning when
Britt Robinson singled down the left-field line to score
Katie Atkins. Hunter attacked the Lion hitters the rest of the way as she gave up only four hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk as she improved to 5-1 on the season.
The offense backed their pitcher up as they scored in every inning except the third. Leading the charge was
Madison Williams who went two-for-three with three RBIs in game one.
Katie Atkins put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run homer to left field that ended the game in six innings.
Ramsey Sullivan and
Haleigh Harrell provided SEU a spark from the bottom of the order, combining to four-of-four at the plate with four runs scored and two runs batted in.
GAME TWO:
It was nearly the opposite for the Fire in game two as Freed-Hardeman ace Brittany Adair threw seven shutout innings, only allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.
Pitcher Megan Froelich kept the Lions at bay through four innings as her only mistake was a solo homerun in the second inning, before allowing a three-run shot that gave FHU a 4-0 lead.
Payton Thomas pitched well in relief allowing just two hits and walked three while striking out four batters.
The Fire (6-5) return to action Thursday, February 25
th when they take on Trinity Baptist in Jacksonville.
