Softball Splits with No. 12 William Carey

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern responded in a big way in the second game of their doubleheader after being held to one hit in a 3-0 loss in the first game.

The Fire erupted for eight runs on 12 hits to come away with an 8-3 win in the second to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Sam Holcomb singled to right field to lead off the top of the first, and that was the last hit the Fire had against Haley Nations, who threw a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and three walks.

Freshman Autumn Hunter dropped to 4-2 on the season, despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits over seven innings of work. Hunter struck out three and walked three.

The Crusaders got a two-out RBI single in the first and added a run in the fourth with two outs on a throwing error and added another on an infield single.

Katie Atkins got the Fire going in Game 2, starting with an RBI single with two outs in the first and added a double in the third and a solo home run in the fourth, which capped off a four-run inning. Atkins was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Madison Williams picked up her team-leading 12th RBI of the season with a single through the left side to score Ramsey Sullivan in the fourth. After Haleigh Harrell scored on a wild pitch, Williams scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaley Sarasty.

In the fifth, Holcomb extended her season-opening hit streak to nine games with a two-run double to left.

After the Crusaders scored three in the sixth, Hannah Bonner picked up an RBI single to right for the final run of the game.

Megan Froelich picked up her first win of the year, throwing five shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks on 68 pitches.

The Fire return to action tomorrow against Freed-Hardeman.
