Women's Basketball Takes Off Past Tornadoes To Commence Classic

LAKELAND, Fla.- On a night where the Fire scored 29 points off of 25 turnovers forced, outscored the Tornadoes 48-22 in the paint, and had graduate center Angela Perry score 26 points, the No. 4 Southeastern University Fire women's basketball team glided to a 103-58 victory over the RV Talladega College Tornadoes Thursday night. 

The Fire set the tone early, shooting 57.1% (8-14) from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc, while holding the Tornadoes to 35.7% (5-14) and 0-3 from three-point range throughout the first quarter. SEU led TC 24-10 after 10 minutes of play.

Southeastern manufactured a 13-0 run to open the second quarter to grow the team's advantage to 39-10 with 5:05 to go in the period. The Fire were extremely efficient from long distance in the first half, going 6-7 from the perimeter. 

SEU took a 52-23 advantage over Talladega into the locker room at halftime.

The Fire also were able to get to the charity stripe early and often, playing an integral role in their success. On the night the Fire were 27-36 from the free-throw line while the Tornadoes were 6-16.

Perry was a perfect 3-3 from the field and 4-4 on free throws in the third quarter, as SEU continued to pull away from TC. In the fourth quarter, the Fire would lead the Tornadoes by as many as 58.

Perry finished with four rebounds to go along with her game-leading 26 points. Gabby Suarez had 15 points off the bench for SEU. Rebecca Cook stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, and a team leading six rebounds and five assists. Tahanee Bennell had 12 points and three helpers. Jamya Rogers had a season high 11 points off the bench for the Fire.

SEU looks to round out the week 3-0, as the Fire close out the invitational with a contest versus the Goshen College Maple Leafs. Tip-off in The Furnace is slated for 7:00 p.m.
