Women's Basketball Handles the Maple Leafs for their 14th Win of the Season

LAKELAND, Fla.- After their 94-63 victory over Goshen College, the Southeastern University women's basketball team advanced their overall record to 14-1.
 
Despite a slow first quarter where the Fire shot only 33% from the field and found themselves trailing the Maple Leafs until the last minute in the first period, the Fire found their groove in the second quarter as the team registered 34 points behind a 72.2 field goal percentage and a 4-7 effort from beyond the arc. Rebecca Cook was perfect through the first two quarters with 15 points behind a 5-5 effort from the field and going 5-5 from the free throw line.
 
In the third quarter, the Fire were outscored by the Maples Leafs 23-15 but were able to advance their lead to 67-51 after going 2-2 from distance and 6-11 from the field, ending the third period with a 67-41 lead over the Maple Leafs. The Fire came out in the fourth quarter with their feet on the gas and registered 27 points in the final 10 minutes of play. Gabby Suarez was a large contributor to the success in the fourth quarter after dropping 12 points, one point behind the Fire's leading scorer in Perry. Perry secured the Fire's 14th win of the season with a jumper with 42 second on the clock to finalize the 94-63 victory and advance her team leading points to 21.
 
Suarez ended the night with a season high 20 points after missing just two shots all night. Suarez was a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line and 3-4 from three point range. Cook had one of the best outings of her career after not missing a shot the entire 32 minutes on the court. The Frankfort, KY. Native was one rebound away from recording a double-double after dropping 17 points and nine rebounds. Tahanee Bennell registered seven assists while Marta Aranda finished the night with five steals.
 
 
The Fire's next contest will be on December 29th, in Lake Wales, Fla. as they take on Husson College at 2 p.m.
