LAKELAND, Fla.—In each year of its existence, Southeastern has played in a game that determined the conference championship.
That is true in 2021 as well as the Fire can clinch a share of their fifth league title in program history with a win tonight over Florida Memorial.
Southeastern is looking for its first Mid-South Sun Division co-championship since 2018 when it shared with Ave Maria.
The Fire have won four in a row since a loss to Ave Maria on October 9
th. Half of those wins are against Top 25 teams. Defensively, SEU is allowing just 14.5 points per game over its last four games. Last week, Southeastern was 6-of-9 on third down and totaled 24 first downs in a 21-14 win over St. Andrews.
Cooper Jones had his best game of the season, completing 19-of-28 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown.
Jonah Paulsgrove has put together a career season during his senior year, ranking 15
th nationally in yards per punt at 39 and has placed 17 punts inside the 20, which is 13
th nationally.
On defense,
Marc Viechec has a team-best 67 tackles and has been in on a tackle for loss in seven of his nine games this year.
The Lions are in search of their first road win since restarting the program last year. Two of the Lions losses are by five points or less, and last week rallied from 17 points down last week to beat Webber International.
FMU is 40% on third down which is ninth nationally. Freshman running back George Young is averaging nearly five yards per carry with five touchdowns on 158 carries. The Lions' six leading receivers all average over 10 yards per reception with Markell Lee leading the way at 329 yards on 26 catches with a team-best four touchdowns.
