Softball Scores Doubleheader Sweep in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla.—Southeastern came through with some key hits, which included a seventh inning rally in their first game to come away with a pair of wins at The Spring Games.

Southeastern used a two-run double in the top of the seventh to defeat Mount Vernon Nazarene 3-2, then used a four-run sixth to reach a 9-1 run-rule victory against Point Park to improve to 5-5 on the year.

A Hannah Bonner RBI single to right field in the top of the second got the Fire on the board first against Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Starting pitcher Peyton Varela was perfect once through the lineup, then ran into problems in the fourth, issuing a two-out walk, which came around to score on a single to right to tie the game. The Cougars took the lead in the fifth with a two-out triple, followed by a single to center field.

In the seventh, the Fire had runners at second and third with two outs when Varela ripped a double to right center to give SEU the lead back. Dayna McDonald worked her second scoreless inning in relief in the bottom of the inning to pick up her second win of the year.

Bonner was 2-for-4 in the game.

Despite trailing 1-0 after a half inning against Point Park, the Fire answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, getting an RBI single from Lauren Watters, a sacrifice fly by Kaley Sarasty, and a two-run single by Linsey Arnett.

Watters made it 5-1 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

That was more than enough for freshman pitcher Megan Froehlich, who improved to 3-2 after working four innings, allowing just one run on four hits with a strikeout and two walks.

In the sixth, Britt Robinson drove in a run with a triple, then an RBI single by Sam Holcomb make it 7-1. A triple by Bonner drove in two and ended the game.

Bonner had two more hits and two RBIs in the second game. Holcomb finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

The Fire return to action on Friday in Columbus, Ga. for the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
