Fire to Host Royals for Sun Conference Series

LAKELAND, Fla.- The No. 4 Southeastern University baseball team looked mighty impressive in their Sun Conference-opening series at Thomas this past weekend. The Fire hit a collective .381 at the plate with 22 extra-base hits, including 12 home runs during the three-game sweep of the Night Hawks. On the mound, SEU compiled a 3.60 earned run average in 25 innings pitched with 33 strikeouts. The Fire continue TSC play this week with a home series versus the Warner University Royals interwoven amongst their Spring Training Exhibition versus the Major League Baseball Detroit Tigers on Friday.

FIRE FOCUS:
  • The Fire offense has posted astronomical numbers to start out the 2020 season. Through 11 games, SEU ranks NAIA Top-10 in eight offensive categories, including first in Home Runs per Game (3.1) and Team Slugging Percentage (.716).
  • Senior outfielder Zach Cornell is the back-to-back reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week. He is belting a team-best .511 five home runs, four doubles, two triples, and 18 runs batted in.
  • The Fire offensive lineup features four players with five or more home runs on the season thus far.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Bryce Mulcahy earned Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week recognition after carrying a no-hit bid into the bottom of the ninth versus Thomas. The St. Helens, Oregon native is now 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.
  • As a collective unit, the SEU pitching staff has posted a 3.18 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 85 innings. Opposing bats are hitting just .204 off of Fire pitching.

  • The Fire lead the all-time series versus the Royals 26-15, having won seven-straight regular season conference series against Warner.

 
THE ROYALS:
  • Warner has lost six of its last seven ballgames after starting the 2020 season 4-2.
  • Offensively, the Royals are hitting .278 at the plate with 27 extra-base hits in 389 team at-bats.
  • Junior infielder Zachary Balogh leads the team in batting average (.393) and hits (11). The Webster, Fla. native also features a .469 on-base percentage.
  • The WU pitching staff holds a 4.98 ERA thus far, striking out 81 individuals in 103 innings of work.
  • Sophomore southpaw pitcher Andrew Yarbrough is 1-0 on the season with a 1.26 earned run average. In 14.1 innings pitched, he has allowed just two earned runs and struck out 11.
