LAKELAND, Fla.—The Southeastern University men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with their 95-74 win over the Brewton-Parker Barons.
The Fire rode the strong play from sophomores
Riley Minix and
Reggie Mesidor to victory as Minix finished with 29 points and nine rebounds while Mesidor tallied 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Neither team could create a large lead through the first 13 minutes of play in the first half. The Fire led 25-23 with 6:54 remaining in the first half before going on a 19-4 run to stretch their lead to 44-27 with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half.
Sophomore
Dylan Patrick came off the bench and scored seven quick points to help the Fire extend their lead. He scored all ten of his points in the first half, shooting 3-5 from the field and 2-4 from 3-PT range.
Minix scored 17 of his 29 points in the first half, converting on five of his nine field goal attempts.
Opening the second half, the Barons trimmed their deficit to just five before the Fire responded with a 12-0 run thanks to four 3-PT field goals from Minix and Mesidor. Mesidor ended up scoring ten of his 18 total points in the second half.
Southeastern never let their lead get below nine points as they separated themselves from the Barons to close the game.
Graduate center
Devon Ford was consistent throughout, notching his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard
Isaiah Moody chipped in 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists in 24 minutes off the bench.
As a team the Fire shot 30-of-60 from the field while converting on 45.2% from beyond the arc and outrebounded Brewton-Parker 49-37.
The Fire (2-0) continue play this week on Saturday when they host Southeastern Baptist at 5:00 pm.
