MARIETTA, Ga.—Southeastern finished its run at the Life University Running Eagle Classic with a 3-1 record, closing with a tough 3-1 victory after a 3-1 loss to unbeaten host Life.
Against Life, the Fire took the first set 25-22 before dropping the three subsequent sets 25-17, 25-15, and 25-21. The fast start was fueled by 14 kills in the opening set.
Emily Boehlein had five of those; half of her team-high 10 kills in the match. The senior also had 12 digs.
Jordyn Stiger also had 10 kills. Emily
Eurice had 30 assists to help the offense, and had 10 digs on defense.
In the back row,
Lindsey Davis had 24 digs and
Fabianne Besosa chipped in 19.
The Fire took the first set from Cumberlands 25-22, which was playing in its first match of the season and hit just .054 with 12 errors. Southeastern needed just seven kills to win the set. The Patriots bounced back with 16 kills and just three errors in the second to win 25-16.
Neither team led by more than three in the third set and was tied at 22. The Fire ended up getting kills from
Julia Alves and Boehlein to take the set 25-23.
It looked like the match may go to a fifth set when Cumberlands held a 15-6 advantage in the fourth, but the Fire battled back to take a 18-16 lead with a 12-1 run. The Patriots eventually took a 24-23 lead, but SEU won three straight rallies, getting a kill and a block from Stiger, who was helped by
Jessica Hidden to win 26-24.
Boehlein led the Fire with 13 kills and had 14 digs. Stiger finished with 11 kills and three blocks.
Emily Eurice had a team-best 31 assists.
Maggie Seagren led the way at libero with 20 digs.
The Fire return to action on Wednesday at Coastal Georgia.
