NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - The No. 2 ranked Southeastern women's basketball team defeated Sun Conference opponent Johnson & Wales 98-61 this afternoon. The Fire improved to 15-2 overall on the season, and 7-0 in conference competition.
The Fire and Wildcats were head-to-head in the first quarter. After 10 minutes of play, Southeastern only held a two-point advantage heading into the second quarter.
Taylah Simmons tallied a total of 10 of the 15 points SEU obtained in the first quarter. The other five points were shot by Reagan Linster. Finishing the first quarter, the Fire were shooting .227 in the field compared the Wildcats who were shooting .462.
Southeastern outscored Johnson & Wales 24-10 in the second quarter, advancing the lead to 39-23 at the break. Simmons added another 10 points to finish the first half with a total of 20 points.
After two quarters of play, SEU were shooting 38% in the field and 83% from the free-throw line. Eliza West finish the half with five rebounds and four assists.
Returning from the intermission, Johnson & Wales outscored the Fire 22-19 in the third quarter, however SEU still ended the third with a 58-45 lead.
Heading into the final quarter, the Fire looked to continue their momentum and finished the game with scoring a total of 40-points in the fourth.
In the second half, Southeastern was shooting an amazing .649 in the field and .429 from beyond the arc.
Junior forward, Simmons earned 36 points this afternoon, setting a new single-game program record for points scored. Simmons also obtained eight rebounds on the day.
Linster was second in points for SEU as she tallied 18 points. Linster also earned four rebounds and five assists.
The Fire will be back in action on January 11th as they return home to play Keiser University at 5 p.m.
