Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Mark McCollum

Fire Score Early and Often En Route to 10-0 Win

LAKELAND, Fla.—The No. 5 Southeastern University women's soccer team scored early and often in 10-0 win over Ave Maria. Uchenna Kanu and Yulie Lopez led the way for the Fire, each scoring two goals and tallying an assist.

The scoring started for the Fire at just under a minute of play when senior Bania Duran finished a Aisha Solorzano cross on the left side of the box, over the goalkeeper's head. Eight minutes later, Southeastern scored its second goal when Lopez found the net coming off an assist from Kanu. Kanu then added a goal of her own when she fired a shot in the net after receiving the assist from Lopez and Isamar Duran.

Junior Kristal Pesina joined in on the action in the 16th minute scoring her first goal of the year, putting the Fire up 4-0. In the 26th minute, freshman Rachel Boyd scored her second goal of the year, finding the back of the net after receiving the assist from sophomore Gabriela Labrador. Junior Abby Leake, in her first game back since 2016 due to injuries, scored her first goal of the season to close the first half.

The Fire attack wouldn't stop there, however, as Kanu and Lopez scored their second goals of the game within eight minutes of play to open the second half. Then in the 69th minute, senior Rachel Wallace notched her first goal of the season off a corner kick. Senior Skylar Streets then put the finishing touch on the game when she scored her second goal of the season in the 84th minute of play.

Southeastern dominated Ave Maria all over the field, firing 18-of-30 shots on goal, and holding their opponent to just one attempted shot. Sophomore Holly Eddins and senior Maddy Miller combined to keep the Gyrenes shut-out.

The Fire (8-2,2-0) are back in action October 5th at 3 p.m. when they host Johnson & Wales.
