LAKELAND, Fla.—The Southeastern University baseball team has been No. 1 in each of the five versions of the Coaches' Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history, but the team has the opportunity to write another piece of history.
With three wins this weekend against Thomas, the Fire will win The Sun Conference regular season title for the first time in program history.
After winning their first 15 Sun Conference contests, the Fire were swept at St. Thomas but bounced back by winning two of three last weekend against Keiser. The Bobcats kept pace with a three-game sweep of Florida Memorial and remain two games back of SEU.
Southeastern has done some damage at the plate this year, leading The Sun Conference in batting average (.360), slugging (.609), runs per game (9.9), and RBIs per game (8.74).
The pitching staff has done its job as well, posting a league-best 3.35 ERA, and are second in opponent batting average at .232 and have held TSC opponents to just a .222 average.
Before taking on Thomas, the Fire will have their final two midweek tune-ups in Jacksonville taking on Edward Waters. Back in February, SEU scored 35 runs during its doubleheader in Lakeland beating the Tigers 20-9 and 15-2.
Since being swept by St. Thomas, Thomas has won its last four conference series against Webber International, Warner, Ave Maria, and most recently, USCB. The Night Hawks have recorded 11 or more hits in each of their last five games, with at least seven runs scored.
Chase Hinson and Jake Bryan are two of the top offensive threats with Hinson hitting .341 with 13 doubles and Bryan with a team-high seven home runs and 45 RBIs.
Friday's game will start at 3 p.m. Saturday, the Fire will honor their senior baseball players at 11:15 with a noon first pitch to start the doubleheader.
