BROOKINGS, S.D.— The Fire track and field team participated in the second day of nationals earlier this afternoon, with four athletes competing in three separate events.
Davonte Vanterpool kicked things off with the semifinals of the 60m hurdles. The freshman crossed the line in 8.81 seconds, finishing sixth in his heat and 28th overall.
Trey Alford also competed for the men, running in the 200m sprint. Alford ended the race fifth (16th overall) with a time of 21.83 seconds.
Namiah Simpson and
Courtney Gales, who both also qualified for nationals in the 4 x 400 relay, then ran in the 400m competition. Gales ran her heat in 57.83, crossing fifth out of eight runners. Simpson automatically qualified for tomorrow's final by finishing second in her race with a time of 56.37 seconds, a new personal best.
Julia Rohm will join Simpson as the only Fire athletes running in finals, as she will take part in the 3,000m run tomorrow at 3:45 EST. Simpson will sprint in the 400m final at 2:05 EST.
Kyle Manuel will compete in the shot put event at 2:00 p.m.
