LAKELAND, Fla.—The women's basketball team received additional recognition by The Sun Conference Thursday night, highlighted by Head Coach
Tim Hays and junior center
Marlena Schmidt.
Hays was awarded The Sun Conference Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers in the league. In three seasons under Hays, the Fire have registered an astounding 84-4 record, including a perfect 52-0 record in TSC play with back-to-back conference championships. This year, Hays has led Southeastern to a 25-2 (18-0) record.
In addition to Hays' accolades, Schmidt received Academic All-Sun Conference recognition for her efforts in the classroom. To be eligible for the award, student athletes must have a 3.5 GPA and complete at least two semesters at the TSC institution. The Pennsylvania native, who averages 10.6 points per game and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per competition, was one of 19 honorees in the conference. Schmidt graduated with a 3.8 GPA after completing her Actuarial Science degree in two and a half years.
The women's basketball team will take the court in the Furnace against Florida Memorial in a Sun Conference Tournament semifinal contest Friday at 5 p.m.
