LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 2 ranked Southeastern women's basketball team defeated Sun Conference opponent Webber International 97-48 this Thursday night in The Furnace. The Fire are now 9-2 overall on the season, and remain undefeated in conference play. SEU have won 66 consecutive games versus Sun Conference opponents.
The start of the match was toe-to-toe between the Fire and the Warriors. It wasn't until there was 3:45 remaining in the first frame, when Southeastern went on a six-point run to get some distance from WIU and hold a eight-point lead.
SEU was shooting 50% from the field compared to WIU's 45.5% in the field. Heading into the second quarter, the Fire led 21-10 over the Warriors.
Southeastern opened the second frame with strong defense and an 11-point streak to further the lead to 32-10. The Fire outscored the Warriors 24-13 in the second frame to finish the half with a 45-23 lead.
In the second quarter, the Warriors were shooting 23% in the field, and were unsuccessful on six out of seven free-throw attempts. SEU were shooting 88.9% from the free-throw line in the second. Angelina Hammond led the Fire with 4-4 free-throw attempts.
Returning from the break, Southeastern looked to continue their momentum and close out the second half. The Fire posted their best quarter in the third. Southeastern outscored their opponents 29-17 to further the lead to 74-40.
Southeastern were shooting 75% from the field, 66.7% from beyond the arc, and 77.8% from the free-throw line. Taylah Simmons led the team with 22 points, and following her were M'caela Sellers with 16 and Marlena Schmidt with 14.
In the final quarter, the Fire earned 23 points and only allowed WIU to score eight points. The Fire finished the night with 53 rebounds. Defensively, SEU obtained 36 rebounds and 14 steals. Eliza West, Simmons, and Schmidt earned three steals each.
The Fire will be back in action on December 7th as they head on the road to play Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla. Game is set to start at 2 p.m.
