There have been just a handful of seniors to ever wear a Southeastern University football jersey. When the 2017 season starts Saturday afternoon at Union College, the Fire will have 16 players who have been in the program for at least four seasons.
"It's like having 16 extra coaches on the field," said coach
Keith Barefield. "At no other time have we experienced the type of leadership these seniors are providing for us."
Many play integral roles on Saturday's, and have helped the Fire to a pair of Sun Conference championships, and were not far from winning another during the inaugural season of play.
The final go-around for these seniors begins in Barbourville, Ky. against Union College as the Fire join the nation's largest college football conference- the Mid-South Conference. The first non-division opponent hails from the Appalachian Division, where it was picked to finish fourth.
The Bulldogs were 5-6 in 2016, and will be under the leadership of first-year head coach Andre Linn, who spent the previous 16 as an assistant at Union, most recently as associate head coach and offensive coordinator.
The future is bright for Union, which returns the reigning Mid-South East Offensive and Defensive Freshmen of the Year.
Lakeland native Izayah Riettie rushed for 596 yards last season with 10 touchdowns. He had a pair of 100-yard games, including a 136-yard effort with a TD against Faulkner.
Justavious Robinson averaged nearly 8.5 tackles per game, and totaled six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss.
