Box Score WEST POINT, Ga. – The No. 20 Southeastern University women's soccer team made a powerful opening statement to kick off the 2017 campaign. The Fire defeated the Point University Skyhawks 5-0 in their season opener. This marks the fourth straight season SEU has opened in the win column.
The Fire did not take long to strike, as sophomore midfielder
Bania Duran found the bottom left corner of the net on a nice ball from sophomore forward
Uchenna Kanu in the 12
th minute.
Kanu went on to have a special opening night. The Abia, Nigeria native rattled off three consecutive goals in the 22
nd, 28
th, and 43
rd minute for her second collegiate hat trick. She has scored 16 goals through the first 10 games of her collegiate career.
"It's a team game. Without the help of my teammates, I could not have scored those goals. It's because of their hard work," shared Kanu.
The Fire took a commanding 4-0 lead into the half.
"In the first half we were doing a good job of keeping the ball and playing through the lines….I was more impressed with the buildup play to get to the finishes on those goals in the end," commented Head Coach
Randy Belli.
SEU added an exclamation point to their victory 1:40 seconds into the second half. Graduate USF transfer
Estefania Fuentes netted the first goal of her Fire career off a deflected shot attempt by Kanu.
"We will go back and watch video and find ways to improve our performance even more and hopefully carry it into the next game," remarked Belli.
Southeastern concludes its participation in the Jenna Paige Bragg Memorial Women's Soccer Classic by taking on Truett McConnell University on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
