Fire Breeze Past Blue Devils, Win Seventh Straight

Southeastern Turns in Solid Performance Behind Dialed in Pitching and Clean Defense

BARTOW, Fla. – After dropping its first game of the season, the No. 7 Southeastern University baseball team has now won seven straight with a resounding 9-0 win over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Wednesday night at Bartow High School.

For just the fifth time this season, SEU completed the game without recording a defensive error.

"We competed well. I'm happy we were able to play a clean game on the defensive side and we need to grow from that moving forward," shared Head Coach Adrian Dinkel.

The Fire acquired their first run of the contest before they attained their first hit, as senior outfielder Marcus Guzman reached second on a bunt attempt in the bottom of the third that was misplayed by Lawrence Tech pitcher James Castiglione. Guzman then reached third on a ground out before crossing home plate on a passed ball to give the Fire a 1-0 lead.

On the mound, junior lefty Corey Stump compiled his most solid outing of the season. The former University of Florida pitcher hurled five innings of two hit baseball, fanning six Blue Devil batters. Stump earned his first win of the season and the first of his collegiate career.

The Fire brought two more across in the bottom of the fourth to grow their lead to 3-0. SEU began to break things open in the following frame as senior catcher Gerald Ceballos doubled home Angel Garced deep down the right field line before he and Luiz Diaz were brought home by an Alex Stephens single to shallow left. The Fire led the Blue Devils 6-0 after five innings.

The fireworks were far from over for Ceballos, who blasted a three run homer well over the center field fence on a 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth that put the Fire up 9-0. In the last two days, the Sterling College transfer is 7-14 at the plate with five long balls.

"Ceballos has been a constant force for us all year. He's seeing it well right now. I'm happy for him that his hard work is turning into positive results," commented Dinkel.

Senior left handed pitcher Josh Egert pitched well in relief, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out five.

The Fire will look to stay hot as they host Purdue University- Northwest on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game times are set for 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.
