AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 7 Southeastern University baseball team bounced back from a loss to Concordia (Mich.) earlier this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Mount Marty College Lancers at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
The Lancers struck first in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from shortstop Brandon Kemp.
The game proceeded to be a pitcher's duel for much of the contest. Junior righty
Adrian Rivera tossed four innings for the Fire, striking out seven and allowing the lone run.
Mount Marty ace Dakota Stone held the Fire scoreless through the first four frames, striking out four and limiting SEU to just one hit during that stretch.
However, that all changed in the top of the fifth, when senior
Danny Acevedo hammered a ball into the wind on a 1-0 count that cleared the left field fence. The homer was his second of the season and tied the game up 1-1.
The Fire earned the go ahead run in the top of the seventh, as Acevedo arrived aboard first on a infield single and a wild throw from Kemp on the play allowed
Luis Diaz to cross the plate.
Solid relief pitching helped keep Southeastern in contention and cemented the win.
Senior right handed pitcher
Brandon Goff threw two perfect innings in the fifth and sixth, punching out three and earning the win.
Senior righty
John Jaeger entered the bottom of the seventh and closed things out, recording the save.
The Fire will take a much deserved four day rest from action. The next task for SEU will be traveling to Lake Wales next weekend to take on Sun Conference rival Warner University. Game one of the three game series is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m.
