Fire Honor Seniors in Historic Performance Versus Gyrenes

Kanu's Five Goal Half Powers No. 10 Southeastern to Resounding Win over Ave Maria

Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – On a rainy Senior Night, the No. 10 Southeastern University women's soccer team scored the most goals versus a Sun Conference opponent in program history, defeating the Ave Maria University Gyrenes 12-2 on the SEU Soccer Field. The Fire finished the regular season 14-1, including 9-1 in TSC play.

Southeastern honored graduating seniors Sydni Brookhouser, Courtney Copeland, Kaitlyn Romero, Heidi Ruth, and Nicole Shaffer, along with their families, prior to the game.

"It was great to be able to honor this senior class, after all they have contributed to the program, with this performance tonight," shared head coach Randy Belli.

Sophomore forward Uchenna Kanu turned in a remarkable first half performance that etched her name into the Southeastern record books. Kanu netted five goals in just 35 minutes of play to take sole possession of the most individual goals scored in program history. The Abia, Nigeria now has 36 goals on the season, the second most in the NAIA.

Kanu scored the first four goals of the contest for the Fire. Two of the four scores were assisted by freshman forward Aisha Solorzano, including a spectacular leaping right footed volley finished far post off Solorzano's cross that put the Fire up 2-0 in the 13th minute.

Just 10 seconds after the Abia, Nigeria native netted her fourth goal of the half in the 30th minute, Solorzano rocketed a through ball from Kanu past the Ave Maria keeper to put Southeastern up 5-0.

Kanu completed her historic half in the 35th minute, finishing a give and go in the left wing from junior forward Isamar Duran to put SEU up 6-0.

The Fire tallied three more scores to their total during a span of three minutes. Isamar Duran netted her first goal as an SEU player in the 42nd minute on a touch finish off the cross from sophomore forward Rachel Wallace. Duran and Wallace both finished with a pair of assists on the night.

Southeastern took a 9-0 advantage over Ave Maria into the half.

Senior center back Heidi Ruth made her Senior Night a memorable one, moving up to the target position to start the second half. Ruth netted her first two goals of the season in the 52nd and 59th minutes. This was the first multi-goal game of her Southeastern career.

Freshman forward Sedona Townsend scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 69th minute off excellent build up play from Jai Sterling and Estefania Fuentes to put SEU up 12-1.

Senior forward Alexia Mazzoccone netted both Ave Maria goals in the 67th and 85th minutes. Mazzoccone was the only AMU player to attempt a shot during the game.

The Fire now wait to find out who they will face in the first round of The Sun Conference Tournament.
