Baseball Sweeps Opening Weekend After Pair of Impressive Wins

Fire Put Away Johnson and Point Early to Finish 3-0 on the Weekend in Georgia

WEST POINT, Ga. – The Southeastern University baseball team capped off a three game sweep on Opening Weekend with a pair of impressive seven inning wins on Saturday. The Fire took down the Johnson University Tennessee Royals 13-3 earlier in the day followed by a 13-2 hammering of Point University in their second meeting of the weekend.

In both contests, SEU put away the opponent early.

Versus the Royals, the Fire strung together back to back four run innings in the top of the second and third. Junior right fielder Jadan Garcia singled home a pair of runs in the second followed by a Royals' fielding error which allowed two more to cross the plate.

In the third, senior infielder Luis Diaz doubled home two more runs after Marcus Stump had already scored on a fielder's choice, giving the Fire an 8-1 lead at the end of three.

In the fourth inning, Stump scored another run thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior infielder Angel Garced. Later in the inning, Garcia added another RBI to his total with a double to right-center field.

The offensive onslaught was capped off in the fifth when senior catcher Gerald Ceballos doubled in two more runs and then was driven across the plate himself on a sac fly from Mike D'Acunti.

Senior right handed pitcher Brandon Goff earned the seventh win of his collegiate career pitching in relief versus the Royals.

Against the Skyhawks, The Fire were aided in the early goings by several Point miscues. SEU brought three across in the top of the first inning without registering a hit. All three runs were scored on an error, walk, and fielder's choice.

The Skyhawks committed six errors in the first two innings and eight total on the night.

Diaz continued to swing a hot bat. The leadoff man went three of four from the plate, scored four runs, and batted in one versus Point. On the day, Diaz batted .625 (5-8), with four extra base hits, and earned a place on base in every at bat.

A five run inning in the top of the second inning gave the Fire and 8-0 advantage over the Skyhawks.

In the top of the seventh, Ceballos hit a two run dinger over the right field fence, the first home run of the season for SEU, to increase the lead to 13-0.

Senior right handed pitcher Nate Harmon posted a solid outing versus Point, tossing five scoreless frames, surrendering only two hits, walking none, and striking out six to earn the win.

The Royals and Skyhawks batted a combined .125 (6-48) versus the Southeastern pitching staff on Saturday.

The Fire will make another road trip to Georgia next weekend as they travel to Mount Vernon for a slate of four games. SEU will kick off the weekend against host school Brewton-Parker College next Friday at 3 p.m.
