WEST POINT, Ga.—Three two-run innings were plenty of support for three Southeastern pitchers to defeat Point on Opening Day.
Southeastern scored its first victory of the season with a 6-1 win at Point University, which made the NAIA World Series last season.
A two-hit, two RBI game from senior designated hitter
Luis Diaz pushed the offense. In the top of the third, Diaz got the Fire on the board for the first time this year with a first-pitch double with two outs to center field, scoring
Angel Garced who was hit by a pitch, and
Jadan Garcia, who walked.
In the fourth,
Luke Maher doubled in
Mike D'Acunti who singled to lead off the inning. Maher also scored that inning on a wild pitch, and finished the day with a pair of RBIs.
Diaz also had a single to lead off the seventh, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Gerald Ceballos, putting the Fire up 5-0.
Preseason All-American pitcher
Kade Wagner picked up his first win as a member of the Fire, throwing five innings, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and a single walk.
Mike Ruppenthal and
John Jaeger each dealt a scoreless frame in relief.
The Fire will play Point again tomorrow at 6 p.m.
