West Palm Beach, Fla. – In what was a tremendous battle, the Southeastern women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season to the 2
nd ranked Keiser University Seahawks 2-1.
The first half was an overall stalemate with great defensive play by both teams. Junior goalkeeper Sydni Brookhauser was tremendous in the first half, registering four saves in the net. The Fire got a couple of nice looks in the first 45 minutes of play, including a shot that was rocketed by senior forward
Alyssa Kaminski off the top of the crossbar.
After only recording one shot in the first 19 minutes of play of the second half, SEU struck first in the 64
th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder
Shayna Cole that was assisted by Kaminski and freshman midfielder
Bania Duran. The score was Cole's fifth of the season and gave the Fire a 1-0 lead. This was only the second time the Seahawks trailed in the second half of a game all season.
However, Keiser responded with a goal by senior forward Johanna Engberg in the 73rd minute to tie things up. Eleven minutes later, Enberg struck again to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead in the 83
rd minute.
The Fire teammates continue to encourage each other and worked to create opportunities, but ultimately fell 2-1. With the loss, Southeastern falls to 7-1 on the season. This was the first time the Fire defensive front surrendered two goals in a match.
The Fire are back on the road for some more Sun Conference action as they travel to take on Johnson & Wales University this Saturday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
