Lakeland, Fla.-- For the first time in school history, the Fire women's soccer program is 7-0, besting the 6-0 mark set by the 2009 team.
With Alyssa Kaminski's goal-scoring streak coming to an end, Konya Plummer stepped up in a major way for Southeastern. The freshman not only scored her first career collegiate goal, but added another two goals to propel the Fire to a 3-0 win.
Just before the half, Heidi Ruth sent a long ball for Plummer, who was moved from her usual defensive position to forward just minutes earlier. Plummer controlled the ball by flicking the it over the Sand Shark defender, ran on to her own pass, took a touch to avoid the keeper, and finished to put the Fire up 1-0.
In the second half, Southeastern continued to feed Plummer the ball, sending through-balls in her direction. However, the next goal came off of a deflection. After gathering the ball in the box, Shayna Cole rang a shot off the post, which fell just inside the penalty spot. Plummer beat her defender to the ball by using her unmatched speed and smashed it into the back of the net to increase the lead to two in the 62nd minute.
A little over ten minutes later, Plummer completed the hat-trick as she was fed another ball into the box by Becky Reynolds. Plummer turned, eluded a couple of USCB defenders, including the goalie, with some fancy footwork, and slotted the ball home.
Head coach Randy Belli said, "I think once Konya came on as the target, she was able to get on the end of some great build-up plays". He added, "she inspired others, picked us up, and allowed us to score some more goals tonight."
However, the Sand Sharks would not go home quietly, sending a flurry of shots Sydni Brookhouser's way. Brookhouser stood tall and kept out every USCB shot, recording her sixth shutout in seven games this season.
Southeastern will face a tough conference opponent in their next contest, as they play unbeaten Keiser University on the road September 28th at 1pm.
