The second home game of the Southeastern Fire 2016 schedule brings in a first-time opponent. The 2-0 Fire welcome the Golden Rams of Albany State University to Victory Field for a non-conference matchup.
Â
Southeastern is coming off of a 65-21 victory in its home opener against Virginia University Lynchburg. The offense, which struggled on the road at Faulkner, lit up the scoreboard and totaled 686 yards of total offense. The ground game was the big positive, racking up 404 yards on 49 carries. Backs
Jarrell Reynolds and
Chris Bryant both eclipsed the 100 yard mark in the contest.
Â
On defense, the Fire once again recorded key takeaways to stop drives. For a second week in a row,
Mark Myers picked off a pair of passes.
Â
Albany State comes in at 0-2, but are likely one of the best winless teams in college football. The Golden Rams' two losses are by a combined 19 points to two NCAA Division II Top 25 teams. In the season opener at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, ASU held a 7-0 lead over three-time National Champion and No. 21 Valdosta State at halftime before falling 16-7. In last week's Whitewater Classic, the Golden Rams led No. 15 Tuskegee 10-7 in the third quarter, but ultimately dropped a 28-18 contest.
Â
Following tonight's third consecutive road game to open the season, the Golden Rams will host West Georgia, ranked second in the d2football.com Top 25.
Â
Senior quarterback Caleb Edmonds has been the catalyst on offense, passing for 373 yards and rushing for an additional 144 through the first two games of the season. Defensively, three-time All-SIAC defensive end Grover Stewart has been a key component to the "Dirty Blue" defense holding opponents to 111 rushing yards per game. The 6-5, 300-pound Stewart was tabbed a Preseason All-American by d2football.com.
