Southeastern is set to play its first game at Victory Field in 2016, hosting the Virginia University Lynchburg Dragons tonight at 7 p.m.
The Fire came away with an impressive win to start the season, as they defeated the 19
th ranked Faulkner University Eagles 10-6 last Thursday. The win was the first over a ranked opponent in program history. The Fire defense was dominant, forcing four turnovers and held the Eagles to their lowest score total since 10/27/12.
Juniors
Mark Myers and
Caleb Winter earned Sun Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances. Myers recorded a single-game best two interceptions to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Winter notched an extra point and 21-yard field goal to contribute to the victory and claim Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
The Dragons are 0-1 on the season, coming off a 71-12 loss to NCAA Division I Grambling State University. Senior quarterback Garrett Schrepfer led both teams in passing yards, throwing for 209 yards on 36 attempts. The Dragon defense recorded four interceptions in the game; including a pick returned for a 10-yard touchdown by sophomore defensive back Derwin Whitt that gave the Dragons a 7-6 lead in the first quarter.
These two teams met last season on October 10th at Victory Field, as the Fire cruised past the Dragons 87-28. The Fire finished the night with 642 yards from scrimmage, with 430 coming in the rushing game.
