FORT MYERS, Fla.—The Sun Conference Tournament got off to a fast start for the Fire baseball team.
Southeastern scored five runs in the first to come away with an 11-6 win over 25
th ranked St. Thomas in the opening round of the tournament.
The Fire recorded six hits in the first, including an RBI triple by
Angel Garced, a ground rule double by
Chris Mattison to score
Derek Martin, and an RBI triple by
Luis Diaz. The Bobcats had to go to the bullpen to get the final two outs of the innings.
SEU added four more in the fourth on two hits, getting three of those runs on a Garced double. Martin brought him in with an RBI single to right center. Garced finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
In 5.2 innings of work, starting pitcher
Nate Harmon allowed five hits and no earned runs. The junior walked two and struck out five.
Leading 9-6, Mattison added two more runs on an opposite field homer.
Senior
Jonathan Martin closed out the last two innings without allowing a baserunner, and recording two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Fire will take on Keiser Saturday at 7 p.m. in the second round.
