LAKELAND, Fla.—In the final two regular season games of the season, the Fire baseball team came away with two much needed wins.
Southeastern defeated Trinity Baptist 5-3 in the first game, and then 6-5 in the nightcap.
The Eagles tied the first game in the top of the fifth at three on an RBI single to bring in a leadoff double. In the bottom of the fifth,
Marcus Guzman led off the inning with his first homer of the year to take a 4-3 lead.
Angel Garced followed up with a solo homer of his own to make it a two-run lead.
Senior
Jonathan Martin worked a 1-2-3 sixth, and
Chris Mattison did the same in the seventh to earn his fourth save of the year.
The Fire trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the second. Senior
Hunter Bonner got the scoring started on a sacrifice fly to score
Luis Diaz.
In the bottom of the fourth, Southeastern took its first lead on an RBI triple by Diaz, and a throwing error that allowed Diaz to score.
Senior
Dylan Jameson shined in his final appearance on the mound at Ted A. Broer Stadium. In his 75
th appearance, but just his second start, Jameson allowed just one run on three hits over four innings of work. He struck out six with no walks, and needed just 56 pitches to get through 16 hitters.
The offense came through in the second, scoring four runs on three hits. Diaz drew a walk, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch. The first of two doubles in the game by Bonner scored
Danny Acevedo from second, and a two-run double by Guzman gave the Fire a 4-0 lead.
Southeastern added two more in the third on an RBI single by Acevedo and Bonner's second double to bring in Acevedo, giving the Fire a 6-1 lead.
Trinity Baptist scored three unearned runs in the fifth, benefiting from two SEU miscues defensively to make it a 6-4 game.
Josh Egert worked a 1-2-3 sixth, and Mattison came on in the seventh and earned his second save of the day, allowing one run on one hit in the top of the seventh.
Bonner and Acevedo paced the offense with two hits each in Game 2.
The Fire will next be in action next Thursday in The Sun Conference Tournament.
