LAKELAND, FLA.-- It was all about
Lindsie Scholwinski in game one and all about
Cat Maldonado in game two. The two pitchers turned in shutouts on their way to leading the Fire to a two-game sweep of Keiser University.
Scholwinski sat down 11 Seahawk batters in game one as Southeastern won 5-0. The lefty scattered five hits and walked one. She improved her NAIA-leading record to 23-4 and her ERA sits at 1.64.
Anna Martin drove in
Taylor Stoltz with a single in the bottom of the first. It became a 3-0 game in the second when
Emily Bryant perfectly executed the squeeze bunt to bring in
Sydnie Malloy; Bryant came around to score on a
Brandee Pietrzak single.
Cheyenne Blaha blasted a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0 and put the game out of reach.
Maldonado turned in her best performance of the year as the junior twirled a three-hit shutout. She gave up only three hits, walked none, and struck out three.
In the bottom of the first, Maldonado drove in
Bri Girardin on an RBI groundout. The only other offense that the Fire could muster was a Bryant RBI single to make it 2-0 in the fifth. Fortunately for the Fire, that was all Maldonado needed.
With the wins, Southeastern improves to 34-10 and a perfect 8-0 in conference play. Keiser falls to 14-20 and 2-6 in conference.
The Fire are back on Sunday afternoon as Sun Conference rival St. Thomas comes to Lakeland for another doubleheader. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
