GULF SHORES, Ala.—A one-run loss to second ranked Lindsey Wilson and an extra innings loss to Morningside ended Southeastern softball's time in the Gulf Shores Invitational.
Trailing 1-0 heading to the second, the Fire took the lead on a two-run home run by
Brandee Pietrzak to take the lead. The Blue Raiders came back with two of their own in the bottom of the second with a pair of two-out RBI singles to go up 3-2.
In the fifth,
Cat Maldonado doubled in
Taylor Stoltz to tie the game at three.
Lindsey Wilson came away with the win on a walk off single to left in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.
Maldonado was the offensive catalyst, going 3-for-4. Stoltz was 2-for-4.
Pitcher
Lindsie Scholwinski took the loss, going 6.2 innings, allowing four earned on 13 hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Against Morningside, the Fire trailed 3-0 after two innings of play, and struggled at the plate with just one hit in the first three innings.
Southeastern scored two in the fourth on an RBI single by Pietrzak and an RBI single by Alex Millett. The Mustangs scored two of their own in the next half inning on a 2-run homer by Allie Martinez off of Maldonado.
A three-run fifth for the Fire pushed the game to extras, thanks to a two-run homer by Maldonado.
Annie Weaver scored earlier in the inning on an RBI single by
Natalie Hughes.
It looked as if a hit by Maldonado in the bottom of the seventh would end the game, but
Sydnie Malloy was called out at the plate.
In the top of the eighth, Morningside erupted for five runs to come away with a 10-6 win.
Maldonado and Hughes each finished 3-for-4.
The loss went to Maldonado, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing here earned on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Fire return to action at home on Wednesday against Purdue Calumet.
