LAKELAND, Fla.—In an effort to stay ahead of impending rain, the Southeastern softball team relocated its doubleheader with West Virginia Tech from Clermont to home and moved the game up.
The schedule change had little effect on the Fire in an 18-0 win in Game 1, but suffered a 6-3 loss in Game 2.
SEU started early with a five-run first, highlighted by a
Cat Maldonado two-run homer to give the Fire a 4-0 lead.
Brandee Pietrzak singled in
Taylor Stoltz and
Bri Girardin to get the scoring started.
The Fire added six more in the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach.
Starting pitcher
Lindsie Scholwinski went the distance, throwing five innings and allowing just four hits, struck out nine, and walked zero. The junior improved to 15-4 on the season.
Girardin finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Maldonado finished with four RBIs on a 2-for-3 effort.
Stoltz got the scoring started in the bottom of the first in Game 2, after stealing third then taking advantage of a wild throw to give the Fire a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Bears scored all six of its runs in the top of the second on five hits.
Maldonado hit her second homer of the day in the fourth, then a squeeze bunt by Girardin in the fifth scored
Heather Faulk to make it 6-3.

The Fire were held to just five hits in the second game, two belonging to Stoltz.
