Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. –
Anna Martin helped the Fire to their first win over Columbia College this afternoon with her second walk-off of the season. This time it was a dinger high over the center field fence that sealed the deal.
The game was scoreless through six and a half innings with six total hits scattered throughout, four of which belonged to the Fire.
Martin was 2-for-3 with a single and a home run while
Lindsie Scholwinski went the distance on the mound striking out 11 of 23 hitters and walking one.
Game two was tied at two after the first inning. Minutes before a lightning delay was issued, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead on two out homer to left.
When play was resumed, a pop-ended the half inning to give the Fire offense their first chance of the game.
Bri Girardin bunted for a base hit in the two hole then scored on a passed ball for run number one. The equalizer was thanks to a wild throw by the Cougars catcher that allowed
Brandee Pietrzak to cross.
Columbia scored its third in the top of the third before the Fire put up two more in the bottom.
Taylor Stoltz crossed on a bases loaded walk after singling in her at bat. Girardin, who was on second at the time of the walk, caught the defense off guard by continuing her stride around third and stealing home for the go-ahead.
Scholwinski earned the save in game two, taking the mound with a runner on first and one out in the top of the seventh. She struck out the first batter she faced, then forced a groundout to end the game.
Emily Bryant pitched the first two innings allowing three hits and two earned runs.
Cat Maldonado notched the win pitching four and a third. She allowed one run on four hits and struck out four.
The Fire are back in action on Wednesday as they take on Eckerd College in a home doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m.
