Baseball Completes Four-Game Sweep of Avila

LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire baseball team closed its four-game series with its fourth straight win over Avila, picking up a 9-2 win Sunday morning.

The game was a make-up from Saturday's rainout.

Leading 3-1, the Fire plated four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Zach Hessinger belted a three-run double to right center. Hessinger came around to score on a pinch hit single up the middle by Blaine Reed.

Chris Mattison came on to pitch in the seventh, throwing a shutout inning with a strikeout and a walk.

Southeastern got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Mattison hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Luis Diaz.

Avila (0-4) answered with a solo home run to left in the next half inning to tie the game.

Jordan Gard earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. The senior struck out two and walked two. Josh Turner pitched a perfect inning in relief.

The Fire return to action Monday afternoon at Tougaloo College in Mississippi to open up a four-game set.
