Baseball Opens Four-Game Set with #25 Red Storm

LAKELAND, FLA.-- After opening the season by getting swept at home by #8 Georgia Gwinnett, it seems that the Southeastern baseball team has righted the ship.  The Fire are now 8-3, riding an eight-game winning streak after sweeping Avila University and Tougaloo College.
The bats came alive against Avila, as the offense outscored the Bulldogs 37-5 over the span of the four-game sweep.  Brandon Goff, Andres Cancio, Jace Herrera, and Jordan Gard all earned their first wins of the season.
In game one, Goff worked six innings of shutout ball, striking out seven and allowing just three hits.  Mike D'Acunti took the first pitch he saw as a member of the Fire and sent it over the center field fence.
Cancio threw five shutout innings in game two, striking out five, and allowing six hits.  D'Acunti led the offense again, going 2-4 with an RBI.  Marcus Guzman was effective from the bottom of the lineup, as the nine-hole hitter went 2-3.  Luis Diaz knocked in a pair of runs as well.
Game three saw the debut of Herrera.  The righty dominated over four innings of shutout ball, striking out six, and allowing only baserunner via hit by pitch.  Chris Mattison hit a 3-run home run over the center field fence, his first of the year.
The Fire scored 10 runs in the fourth inning; the inning was highlighted by a 2-run homer by Danny Acevedo.  In the same inning, Acevedo cleared the bases with a 3-run double.
Southeastern completed the sweep in game four Sunday morning.  Gard pitched five innings, giving up two runs, five hits, and striking out two.  Zach Hessinger hit a 3-run double to give the Fire all the offense they would need on their way to a 9-2 win.
Right after the final game against Avila, the Fire hopped on a bus to Mississippi to take on Tougaloo College in a four-game series over the next two days.  By this point, the Fire offense was locked in and weren't showing any signs of slowing down, as they outscored the Bulldogs 56-11 over the four games.
In game one, Cole Yoder pitched a complete game, giving up only one run on seven hits, striking out four.  D'Acunti hit his second home run of the year and he finished 3-4 with 3 RBI's and a run scored.
The Fire couldn't be stopped on the base paths in game two, as the team went 12-12 on stolen base attempts.  Guzman and Sean Anderson each stole three bases, as Mattison and Mac LeBoeuf stole two each.  D'Acunti again was a focal point for the offense as he went 2-5 with a double and a triple.  Mike Ruppenthal earned his first win of the season as he went five innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out six.
The game three victory was one to celebrate, as head coach Jason Beck won his 600th game.  His team wasted no time in making sure he got to the milestone, as the Fire offense cruised to a 22-3 win.
F.T. Corso earned his first win of the season, as he went five innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five.  Acevedo came off the bench to belt a pinch-hit grand slam in the six-run sixth inning.
Hunter Bonner went 3-3 with four runs scored and an RBI.  Guzman went 3-5 with four runs scored and four RBI's.  The team stole nine bases, and it continued in the last game, as the offense swiped 12 more bases, including four by Baziel Cabrera.
Ryder Albright earned the win, going five innings and allowing two runs (no earned).  Garced went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Carbrera went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Southeastern returns home today to host #25 Rio Grande.  Doubleheaders are set for Friday at 4 and 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Red Storm opened their season at Bryan College and ended up getting swept in a four-game series.  First baseman Cody Blackburn leads the team in batting average at .429.
All four games are set to take place at Broer Stadium.  You can follow the team on Twitter by following @SEUFireBaseball.
