CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—In the first match of the second Southeastern wrestling season, the Fire showed dramatic improvements, coming away with three individual victories against NCAA Division I No. 23 Tennessee Chattanooga.
The Fire ultimately lost the match 40-12, but showed dramatic improvement from last season's 50-0 loss to coach
Javier Maldonado's alma mater.
Things got off to a great start in the match held outdoors at Chamberlain Field, the former home of UTC football, with Olson Delsica picking up a 9-8 decision over Alonzo Allen to give the Fire a 3-0 lead.
Adrian Hughes scored a pin at 149 in the third period against Austin Gould, which came after back-to-back victories by the Mocs.
Giovanny Bonilla then scored an 18-11 decision at 157 to put the Fire back up 12-11.
Three straight falls by UTC put the match out of reach.
The Fire return to action next Saturday in North Carolina to take on St. Andrews, Campbellsville, and Newberry in duals.
