For the first time in program history, the Southeastern football team is heading to the postseason. The Sun Conference champions were one of 16 teams invited to participate in the 2016 NAIA Football Championship Series.
SEU is coming off a tough 17-13 home loss to Valley City State University to close the regular season. The Vikings scored all 17 of their points unanswered in the second half. This marked the first time in program history the Fire have lost multiple home games in a single season.
The Fire boast the top ranked rush defense in the NAIA, holding opponents to an average of 47.8 yards per game on the ground and having yet to surrender a rushing touchdown. The SEU defensive front has recorded a total of 89 tackles for loss for a total of 426 yards.
The Reinhardt Eagles come into Saturday's contest undefeated on the season. In their eleven games, the Eagles have outscored opponents 616-129 and have only trailed for a total of 4:30. Most recently, Reinhardt piled up 675 yards of total offense in a 58-7 win over Bethel (Tenn.) to clinch the Mid-South West Division title.
It will be a battle of top rush defense versus top rush offense, as the Eagles average an NAIA-leading 385.9 rushing yards per game.
Five different backs have 50 or more carries, three different ones have scored 10 or more rushing touchdowns, and 14 different ball carriers have found the end zone for Reinhardt this season. The top gainer on the ground for the Eagles has been senior running back L.J. Stegall, who has ran for 623 yards and ten touchdowns
