MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—The Southeastern volleyball team ended a two-game slide by knocking off Florida Memorial on the road in a tightly contested match.
The Fire (11-11) scored the first four points of the first set, getting kills from
Kaitlin Boyd and
Kelsey Morton, and benefited from a pair of Florida Memorial attacking errors. Southeastern built a 9-point lead, thanks to a 7-0 run that featured a pair of kills from
Lydia Rooth.
FMU built some momentum at the end of the first set, cutting into an 11-point deficit with an 8-2 run before falling 25-19.
In the second set, the Fire again built a 4-0 lead, but the Lions rallied back to tie the match at nine. The Lions stayed right with the Fire the duration of the set, committing just five attack errors on 38 attempts to post a .237 hitting percentage that set.
Florida Memorial had a set point at 25-24, but a kill by Morton, a set error, and a kill by Rooth helped the Fire escape with a 27-25 win.
The third set was similar to the second, but it was the Fire trying to keep pace with the Lions, who had a four-point lead midway through the set.
Southeastern answered with a 6-0 run to take a 19-15 lead, but the Lions surged right back with four straight to tie the match at 19.
The Lions had a chance in extra points, leading 26-25, but three straight errors gave the Fire a 28-26 win and the match.
Morton finished with a team-best 14 kills and .333 attacking percentage.
Lindsey Fleming assisted on 28 of SEU's 37 kills.
Defensively,
Alyssa Prescott had 14 digs, and Morton added 12.
The Fire will be on the road again on Wednesday to take on Ave Maria at 7 p.m.
