AVE MARIA, Fla. - The Fire women's volleyball team traveled south to compete against Ave Maria University in their first of two Sun Conference matches this week. Southeastern secured a straight set win over the Gyrenes and improved their record to 12-11 on the season.
At the start of the first set, the Gyrenes jumped to an early 7-3 lead. The Fire, however, never relented, tying the set and ultimately enduring a late run to win 25-21.
As the second set commenced, the Fire's attack, led by Lydia Rooth, began to heat up. Southeastern proceeded to go on an 8-1 barrage, finishing the set with a whopping hitting percentage of .578. The Gyrenes were not able to regain any traction, and the Fire won the set handily by a score of 25-10.
In the third set, the margin of victory was a bit less, with the Fire coming out on top 25-19.
Throughout two matches against the Gyrenes this season, the Fire have not dropped a set.
Overall, Southeastern's attack was electric, finishing with a team hitting percentage of .341. Uche Kojo and Rooth had solid games for the Fire, both finishing with double digit kills. Rooth, a native of Raleigh, N.C., completed the match with 16 kills. Setting up the attack for the Fire was Lindsay Fleming, who concluded the game with an impressive 33 assists.
The Fire look to carry the momentum from tonight's contest into their next match, which is scheduled for this Saturday, October 29, 2016, at 2 p.m. when they take on Keiser University at the Furnace.
