Fire Shut Down Warriors to Kickoff Homecoming

Southeastern continued their dominant season by shutting down a physical Webber International team.

It didn't take long for the Fire to find the back of the net. In just the fifth minute, Becky Reynolds launched a long throw-in into the box and Uchenna Kanu settled the ball around the Warrior defender and slotted it into the bottom corner.

Shortly after Kanu's strike, Bania Duran joined the goal-scoring sheet. Nicole Shaffer sent a simple through ball to Duran, who was sprinting between the two Webber center backs. Duran calmly finished, as she passed the ball past the keeper to double Southeastern's lead in the 10th minute.

Though all of the Fire's goals in the game involved impressive skill, their third of the contest was by far the best. Ten minutes into the second half, Konya Plummer played a ball over the top from her defensive position. Kanu ran onto the ball in stride, used her pace to beat a Warrior, dribbled through three more defenders as if they were cones, and blasted a shot into the far post side-netting.

The Fire maintained constant attacking pressure throughout the course of the entire game. They outshot the Warriors 18-3 and earned seven corner kicks in the match. On one of those corner kicks, in the 67th minute, Southeastern capitalized once again. Shayna Cole sent a ball into the box, which was settled by Kanu. The keeper was caught out of position, as Kanu's ball found its way to the feet of Karly Palmar. Palmar rocketed the ball into the gaping net from close range, securing the Fire's 4-0 win.

Coach Randy Belli appreciated his players' effort on the offensive side of the ball. "All of the goals we scored today were impressive. They involved team effort, as well as individual plays of skill. They were some of the best goals we've scored this season."

Not only was the Fire offense clicking, but their defense recorded the ninth shutout of the season. Coach Belli enjoyed that fact, too. "To be able to consistently shutout opponents is something to be proud of. I liked the effort on defense along with the well-crafted goals."

The Fire will put their perfect home record (6-0) on the line in their next matchup against SCAD on Monday October 24th at 5 p.m.
