Women’s Soccer Strikes Early to beat Bees

LAKELAND, Fla.—Two goals in the first six minutes allowed the Fire to improve to 12-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over SCAD-Savannah.

It marks the 10th shutout of the season for the Fire.

Heidi Ruth got the scoring started by lobbing a ball over the SCAD defense from the midfield onto the feet of Konya Plummer, who raced into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net to the keeper's right to take a 1-0 lead just 100 seconds into the match.

In the sixth minute of play, Alyssa Kaminski scored her 11th goal of the season, corralling a ball that was mishandled by the keeper and drilled into the goal.

That was all the Fire needed, as the defense allowed just two shots on goal the entire night. Center backs Megan Penhaligon, Heidi Ruth, and Konya Plummer were excellent stopping the SCAD attack in the defensive third.

Uchenna Kanu added the final goal of the night in the 38th minute of play, scoring on a feed from Shayna Cole.

The Fire now improve to 6-1 in The Sun Conference, matching the most conference wins in a season by an SEU women's soccer team.

The Fire return to action Thursday evening against St. Thomas at 5 p.m.
