Depth Powers Fire Past St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—Four players were in double figures in Southeastern's 74-67 win at St. Thomas, to improve to 3-1 in The Sun Conference.

The Fire (12-3) were paced by Christin Strawbridge's seventh double-double of the year, scoring a game-high 20 points, and snagging a game-best 16 rebounds. The junior was 9-of-14 from the field.

Alyssa Ramos connected on four 3-pointers, including one with 20 seconds to go at the end of the first quarter to give Southeastern a 19-18 lead at the quarter break. Ramos finished the night with 17 points, seven assists, and four rebounds.

The Fire led by as many as 11 in the first half, when Kristen Scholl knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:56 to go to put SEU up 40-29. A basket at the buzzer by the Bobcats' Jamesha Willis got STU (7-6, 1-2 TSC) within nine at the break.

A 10-3 run to start the third quarter gave Southeastern a 16-point lead with 6:28 to go as Ramos knocked down a three to put the fire up 50-34.

Scholl added a jumper in the lane with 9:18 remaining to give the Fire their biggest lead of the night at 64-47. The senior finished the night with 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals.

St. Thomas made a run with just four players remaining for the final 2:27 due to fouls and cut the deficit to seven on a pair of 3-pointers with 1:37 left, but Strawbridge converted a jumper in the lane with 39 seconds to go to ice the game.

Ali Sanders added 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists to the winning effort.

As a team, the Fire shot 46% from the field, 42% from 3-point range, and were 8-of-12 at the free throw line.
