Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Fire women's basketball extended its win streak to eight this evening with an 80-60 win over Ave Maria. With the win, they move to 13-3 and 4-1 in The Sun Conference.
Just under half of the Fire's points were from beyond the arc as they connected on 13 of their 28 attempts.
Carlie Newman claimed five and ended the night with 15 points.
Southeastern couldn't be paid to miss in the first three minutes as they went six-for-six to take an early 14-0 lead. The Gyrenes came as close as six in the first quarter, down 16-10 with 2:56 to play.
The second quarter was the Fire's most productive as they outscored the Gyrenes 28-15. A 17-2 run fueled by four of the Fire's 13 3-pointers gave them a 25-point lead, their largest of the half, up 46-21 at the 2:06 mark.
Southeastern led by 22, 49-27 at half and enjoyed a 26-point cushion, their largest lead of the game, three times in the third quarter. Their lead never fell below 18 throughout the rest of the game.
Despite their major deficit at half, the Gyrenes came out hard, winning the third quarter 18-16 and matching the Fire in the fourth with 15 points.
Ali Sanders led the Fire with 19 points shooting 64% from the field while
Christin Strawbridge secured her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards.
Alyssa Ramos also put up double digits with 12 points, nine of which came from three long balls.
The Fire are back in action at The Furnace on Thursday night against the Night Hawks of Thomas University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
