Football Looking to Stay Hot against Concordia

LAKELAND, Fla.—Sitting at 2-1 on the season, the Southeastern University football team is continuing to look for improvements heading into its bye week next week.

Before the hiatus from game action, the Fire will take on Concordia University tonight at 7 p.m. at Victory Field, and will be looking to clean up a few things.

Last Saturday, the Fire won the first Sun Conference game of the 2015 season with a 45-9 victory over Polk County rival Warner University at Lakeland Christian. After a slow start which saw SEU amass just 67 yards on 22 plays in the first half, the offense broke open in the second half with 287 yards and 28 points.

"We still are making too many mistakes," said coach Keith Barefield after last Saturday's game. "We've had way too many penalties, not protecting the ball, special teams errors, and substitutions. We should be over those and something we'll be working hard on."

Redshirt freshman quarterback Railond Garrett was solid in his first collegiate start, passing for 139 yards and completing nine of his 14 passes. He also ran the ball nine times for 13 yards and scored twice.

The Fire defense played a big role in the victory, totaling seven tackles for loss, four sacks, three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Treshez Ellzey's second quarter interception was returned 74 yards for a touchdown.

"I was really proud of Alex (Mack) and Treshez for coming up with some big plays," said Barefield. "We also had an interception in the end zone by Mark Myers which was really huge."

Concordia enters the game with an 0-3 record on the season, but led in all three of its contests this year. Last week, the Hornets held a 15-2 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Hornets forced four Stillman turnovers, but were unable to hold on in the final frame.

Running back Alexander Montgomery rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries last week, however, quarterback James Crosby was sacked four times by the Stillman defense.
