Box Score LAKELAND, FLA.– Rain looked like it would wash out the doubleheader, but play resumed after a 40 minute delay. Southeastern and Davenport ended up splitting the doubleheader, with the Fire taking the first game by a score of 3-1 and the Panthers winning the nightcap 8-3. With the split, SEU now stands at 11-6.
In the first game, it was all about sophomore southpaw Cole Yoder. Yoder (1-2) turned in the best performance of his career, pitching a complete game; he gave up four hits, one run, and struck out six. He had complete command of the strike zone–the Panther's offense was kept off-balance with the slow curveball and pinpoint accuracy of the two-seam fastball. Not a single batter was walked and he needed only 77 pitches to get through the whole game.
All of the scoring for the Fire came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Aldo Ferrante started the hitting party with a single to right field. An RBI single by Willi Martin and then an RBI triple by Luis Diaz scored a couple runs before Corbin Weeks knocked in Diaz with a single of his own to give the Fire all the runs they would need.
Martin finished 3-3 with an RBI and run scored. TJ Glessner stole his 10th base of the season, tying him for most in the Sun Conference.
The tables were turned in game two of the doubleheader. Davenport struck for six runs before the Fire could manage to get anything going. Brandon Goff (0-2) took the loss in the contest, as he lasted four innings and gave up six earned runs on seven hits. Dylan Jameson and Manny Matos pitched the last two innings, and they gave up a run each.
SEU plated a couple unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth innings thanks to some miscues on defense by the Panthers. Martin and Diaz reached base on errors and were driven in on a 2-RBI single by Connor Oliveri.
Aaron Sheaks drove in the last run in the bottom of the seventh; he finished 2-4 in the game.
The Fire are back in action Friday night, as they'll host the Thomas University Nighthawks in a Sun Conference three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm at Broer Stadium.
