Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.- Northwood pitcher Cody Gray looked far from the part of a guy that had an 0-2 record Friday night at Broer Stadium.
The senior worked seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 11 in a 10-0 win over the Fire in eight innings.
The two runs the Seahawks scored with two outs in the bottom of the first are all Gray needed, as he fanned 11 SEU hitters. The Fire (9-4, 3-1 TSC) didn't tally their first hit until their eighth hitter when Aaron Sheaks hit a line drive off of Gray for an infield single with one out. A fielder's choice and a fly out to center field ended the threat in the bottom of the third.
Grey retired 11 straight hitters following the hit by Sheaks in the third. Aldo Ferrante led off the seventh with a double to left field, but a fly out and a pair of strikeouts silenced SEU. The Seahawks (7-4, 3-1 TSC) broke the game open with a five-run eighth to take a 10-0 lead.
Sean Anderson hit a pinch hit double to right for the final hit of the game, but was left stranded after a pop out and a strikeout to end the game on the run rule.
Fire starter Patrick Kinney settled down after the first, but still suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five runs on six hits over six innings of work. Kinney struck out six and walked three.
The teams return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at noon.
