Gaines begins his first season with the Fire football program in 2016, coming to Lakeland from the NCAA Division I ranks. 

During the 2015 season, Gaines served as an assistant running backs coach at Utah State . He spent two seasons at Southmoore High School in Oklahoma as wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. 

Gaines has also spent time as a graduate assistant at Northwestern Oklahoma State during his career.
