Head football coach Adam Waugh has announced the hiring of Tony Carter to the defensive staff as cornerbacks coach.
Carter comes to the Fire after spending two years with the XFL’s Orlando Guardians, where he was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He spent seven seasons in the NFL, playing for the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and twice with the Denver Broncos.
“We are blessed to add Tony Carter to our staff as cornerbacks coach,” said Waugh. “His status as a former NFL player gives him instant credibility with our players, and his coaching knowledge has already been a great addition to our defensive staff. Most importantly, his demeanor and coaching style embodies our mission of "building champions while pursuing championships.”
Before his stint in the XFL, Carter served as the cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator for Southern Illinois. Prior to his time in Carbondale, he was a defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions in 2020 under head coach Matt Patricia.
He broke into coaching in 2010 with the University of Jacksonville, where he spent nine years as the cornerbacks coach and special teams assistant.
