Richard McNutt joins the Fire coaching staff in 2020, bringing a decade of experience at the NCAA Division I and professional levels.
Most recently, McNutt worked at Youngstown State for four seasons as the Co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach, helping the Penguins reach the 2016 FCS National Championship. McNutt also headed recruiting for coach Bo Pelini, and mentored five defensive backs that landed in NFL camps. Twice the YSU secondary led the Football Championship Subdivision in pass defense.
McNutt also spent three seasons in the Mid-American Conference as a secondary and defensive backs coach with stops at Toledo, Kent State, and Northern Illinois. At NIU, the Huskies rose all the way to 15th in the polls and appeared in the Orange Bowl. Additionally, he was in charge of team chapel services.
McNutt followed Dave Doren to North Carolina State for the 2013 season, helping the Wolfpack finish third in the ACC in Pass Defense, and fourth in Scoring Defense. He then went on to North Carolina Wesleyan, where his secondary led the USA South in Pass Defense.
A former defensive back at The Ohio State University spent a year as a student assistant under Jim Tressel, and also spent a season working with the secondary and special teams with the Cleveland Browns under Romeo Crennel.
As a redshirt junior, McNutt was part of the Buckeye team that defeated Miami in overtime to win the National Championship at the Fiesta Bowl.
